Plumes are red-hued bottlebrush, that are a full 8" long, and emerge mid-summer. Pennisetum prefers to be grown in rich loamy soil with good drainage and full sun or light shade. However, it will grow in rocky or sandy soil as long as it remains fairly moist. This grass resents having "wet feet". Tall. PENNISETUM a. 'Red Head'. 4-5' tall with equal spread, full sun, mid-late summer bloom. Deep purple buds mature to smoky purple plumes that can measure 3" wide and 8-10" long. It begins to show its huge, bottlebrush plumes in mid-late summer. The green foliage turns to gold tones in the cool fall temperatures. The combination of foliage and flower remains attractive for several months. Warm season. Zones 5-9. Potted in 3" pot.
